Background
Bonjour Bakery has been on the same quiet Sinsa side street for eleven years. Mornings have always been strong — office workers grabbing croissants, the 10am coffee crowd from the co-working space next door. Afternoons were always thin. The owner, Hyewon, had resigned herself to it. "Afternoons are afternoons," she said. "Some days, nobody comes for an hour."
What we tried
We published one offer: the "Bonjour afternoon plate" — a quarter-cut croissant, a canelé, and an Americano for ₩7,500, roughly 30% off the sum of the parts, available strictly between 14:00 and 16:30. Cap of 30 plates per day. No other changes to the menu or the storefront.
What happened
The first three days were quiet — 6, 9, 11 claims. By day ten, the cap was hitting at 15:45. By week three, Hyewon raised the cap to 50. By week eight, afternoon revenue was up 42% versus the same eight weeks the previous year. More importantly, Tuesdays and Wednesdays — historically her dead days — now ran at 85% of her Friday afternoon volume.
Why it worked
Three things. First, the offer was specific — a product, not a discount. Second, the window was tight enough to feel urgent. Third, joayo put Bonjour on the map for everyone within a 600m radius who opened the app between lunch and dinner, most of whom had never walked down her street.
What Hyewon says
"I thought afternoons were just a fact. They were a habit. Customers had a habit of not coming, and I had a habit of accepting it. joayo broke both habits in about six weeks."
What's next
Bonjour is now testing a morning surprise bag for day-old pastries, picked up between 09:00 and 10:30. Early numbers suggest it will pay for itself within the first three weeks.
